ABOUT US

The real story isn't on your screen. It's next door.

SENKŌ is Thailand’s visual storytelling incubator for the
youth. Through storytelling competitions, international
exchange, and mentorship programs, we encourage
highschool students to meet a stranger in their own
community and learn what makes their home “home”.

We’re building a generation that looks up from their phones and rediscovers their own communities.

Our approach

How they chase the light

01

Meet People

A camera gives students a reason to approach someone they'd otherwise just walk past — and that small act of courage opens the doors of learning.

02

Stories Over Selfies

We help reclaim the phone as a tool to share a story with the world — instead of a tool used only for selfies and doom scrolling.

03

Rediscover “Local”

We help students see their own communities with fresh eyes — finding beauty in the market, the field, the neighbor they'd stopped noticing.

04

Then Go Global

The winning team travels to Japan to photograph alongside students from over 20 countries at the Higashikawa Youth PhotoFest — exchanging cultures and forming friendships.

Our Partners

From a town in
Thailand to Japan’s
Town of Photography

SENKŌ’s international partner is Higashikawa, Japan’s Town of Photography in Hokkaido. Each year the winning team joins the Higashikawa Youth Photo Festival Exchange — a one-week immersion learning photography alongside peers from over 18 countries, forming lasting friendships and broadening how they see the world.

SENKŌ is also held with the support of the Embassy of Japan in Thailand, reflecting our commitment to Thai–Japanese friendship, youth exchange, and cultural understanding through photography.

IN THEIR WORDS

What our storytellers say

“SENKŌ wasn't just about clicking the shutter for a pretty photo. It transformed me from someone who just takes pictures into someone who wants to listen with an open heart and pass on my community's stories as deeply and honestly as possible.”

“I met a vendor auntie at the market who touched me with the warmth she gave everyone around her. Even though she'd been working since early morning, she kept smiling. Photographing her, I could feel the warmth and kindness of that whole community.”

“While walking along the road to shoot kolae boats, we came across kids fishing, laughing and happy together. It made us think real happiness doesn't have to be found in a big city, but in small things we enjoy doing.”

“Every photo in this competition is one timeline, but some places move faster than others. Here in this hilltribe village, life moves slower and healthcare and education are harder to reach. I want to be a voice for ethnic communities.”
